Parrains 2017

What do the sponsorships tell us about the French presidential election.

There have been 14 296 elected members who accepted to support a candidate to the French presidential election. Among them, 9 756 mayors brought their support to one of the 61 candidates in his way to the Elysée.

11 candidacies were approved by the Constitutional Council. To be approved, a candidacy must get 500 supports and must verify that :

  • not more than a tenth of the 500 supports needed, which means 50 tops, comes from the same county or overseas community.
  • these supports are provided by elected members from at least 30 counties or overseas communities.
The Constitutional Council website presents more details.

For the first time, the supporters' list is given to the public. For the first time, we can explore these data.

Which candidate gets the biggest number of supporters ? Which type of elected members support who ? Who is the candidate of the cities ? Who is the candidate of the countryside ? Who is the candidate of the women ?

For example, try to respond to these questions :

  • Which candidate gets the biggest number of supporters ?
  • What is the weight of the mayors' sponsorships ?
  • Between François Fillon and Benoit Hamon, Who is the candidate of women ?
  • Between Benoit Hamon and Marine Le Pen, who is the candidate of the urban areas ?
  • Between Emmanuel Macron and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who is the candidate of the areas where the unemployment rate is the highest ?
  • Who is the candidate of mayors ? Farmers ? Teachers ?
